J.R.R. Tolkien (1892-1973)
John Ronald Reuel (J. R. R., "Tollers") Tolkien was born in 1892 in South Africa, but he was only three years old when he, his mother, and his younger brother went to England for a visit with family. His father, who remained in South Africa, died, and Tolkien’s mother settled them in England instead of returning to their South African home. He was sixteen when he met his future wife, Edith Bratt (the inspiration for his beloved literary characters Arwen Undomiel and Lúthien Tinúviel), and twenty-one when he proposed to her; they married in 1916 and had four children. Tolkien died in September of 1973 at eighty-one, two years after the death of his wife.
