Bridge to Terabithia

by Katherine Paterson
128 pages, Fantasy

Good read, though not very good morals and a bit of language.

Plot

Jesse Aaron's greatest ambition is to be the fastest kid in the fifth grade. But on the first day of school, a new kid, a new girl, crosses over to the boys' side of the playground and outruns everyone. That's not the most promising start for a friendship, but Jess and Leslie Burke become inseparable. Together they create the magical kingdom of Terabithia, a magical kingdom where they reign as king and queen. Together they go on magical adventures through the wonderful world created out of their heads.

Morality

Insults are thrown from many of the characters in the book. Two characters are constantly fighting. Jess and Leslie play a trick on a classmate, yet are not punished for their actions.

Spiritual Content

There is no magic in the book. Any magic is purely the product of Jess and Leslie's imagination. The characters go to church once. Jess and Leslie worship "The Spirits" in the "Sacred Grove". The spirits, however, are not real.

Violence

There are a few fights with the bullies. One character's death is mentioned, but not described.

Drug and Alcohol Content

None.

Sexual Content

Some boyfriend/girlfriend relationships are mentioned, but nothing serious.

Crude or Profane Language or Content

The word Lo*d is said at the beginning of plenty of sentences. D**n is said once or twice.

Conclusion

Bridge to Terabithia is truly a gripping story. Katherine Paterson's characters will grip your heart as if it were your own life. The morals, however, are not the best, so this isn't a role model kind of a book.
