William Shakespeare (1564-1616)
Born some time before April 26, 1564 (his baptismal date), William Shakespeare is known for the plethora of plays - tragedies, comedies, and historical works - that are preserved from his time. He was born in the town of Stratford-upon-Avon to parents John and Mary, and at the age of eighteen he married Anne Hathaway of a neighboring village. They had three children in the interim between 1582 (their marriage) and 1592, when Shakespeare is first recorded as being on stage in London, but otherwise that period of time affords scholars little information on Shakespeare's life. After he entered his career as a playwright he came back onto the recorded stage, so to speak, as he quickly became popular; his famous works date from this period of time until 1600, when his writing dropped off. He died in 1616 and was buried in his birth town, in the Holy Trinity Church.
